Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted via the online Jacobs School of Music Graduate Application. Submit official academic records in the original language from every postsecondary school you have attended, whether or not you obtained a degree. If the original document is not in English, also provide an official, exact (literal) English translation. Records must be issued by the registrar or record-keeping official from the institution at which the work was completed. Notarized copies of academic records are not acceptable. The minimum TOEFL result for the doctoral degree program is a paper-based score of 600, a computer-based minimum of 250, and an internet-based minimum of 100.

The Graduate Division of the Jacobs School of Music offers course work leading to the degree of Doctor of Music in the areas of music literature and performance, composition, and conducting. The Jacobs School of Music also offers the Doctor of Music Education degree and, through the University Graduate School, the Doctor of Philosophy degree in the areas of musicology, music education, and music theory. Most doctoral degrees require 60 credits of coursework, with 36 in the major field, 12 in a minor field, and 12 additional credits inside or outside the major field.
