Applicants for admission to the M.M. or D.M.A. degree programs in performance or Graduate Artist Certificate in Music Performance (GAC) must pass an admission audition before a faculty panel.
Apply for admission to UNT through the Toulouse Graduate School (tgs.unt.edu).
Apply for admission to the College of Music through the online application for admission, audition, scholarship, fellowship and assistantships
Submit the following materials through the music application:
A resume
Three letters of recommendation by persons who know the applicant personally, professionally and academically.
Examples of scholarly writing, a research paper, a published article, or an essay that demonstrates the ability to address significant issues pertaining to the area of study.
Statement of personal interest, to include a statement indicating reasons for interest in pursuing graduate study in the chosen field.
Evaluation of transcripts from previous degree(s): N.B. Please DO NOT send transcripts to the College of Music. They are part of your application to UNT's Toulouse Graduate School. After Toulouse evaluates your documents, they will forward copies to the College of Music for review. Your transcripts will be evaluated and notification of required leveling courses will be sent by the Graduate Studies Office after you receive notice of your admission.
Composition portfolio (required for all Ph.D. with a concentration in Composition applicants)
Effective for the Fall 2024 admission cycle, we no longer require submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or UNT Graduate Writing Exam.

Refine your composition skills at one of the nation's most comprehensive music schools recognized internationally for its artistic and academic excellence. The graduate Composition program at the University of North Texas is one of the largest and most diverse in the nation with 70 composition students and six faculty composers representing a wide range of compositional aesthetics approaches. One of the distinctive features of the UNT Composition program is the way that state-of-the-art music technology is integrated with acoustic composition within the curriculum, which provides both artistic flexibility and academic rigor, allowing you to refine your craft, develop your own personal voice and prepare for a career as a professional composer.<br><br>Our faculty members have been recognized for their acoustic, electroacoustic and intermedia work through grants, fellowships, commissions and performances throughout the world. Educational and artistic experiences are enriched through regular guest residencies, including composers and other new music specialists, as well as dozens of other events during the academic year.<br><br>The college is a vital component to the region's arts community, presenting more than 1,000 formal and informal concerts annually. Its facilities include more than 300 practice rooms, seven performance halls, numerous classrooms and rehearsal rooms, and computer labs.
