The Michigan State University string area is deeply committed to providing the artistic, technically proficient instruction and performance opportunities students need for success in the professional world of music.<br>Students in the string area at MSU benefit from the extensive teaching and performance experience of world-renowned faculty. Students receive the individualized attention they need to succeed in the world of music, as well as a range of opportunities to collaborate with student and professional musicians. Many graduates excel as members of full-time professional orchestras worldwide. String majors attend weekly studio classes that feature a combination of solo, chamber music, and orchestral repertoire in preparation for careers in these areas. All string studio classes are open to all string majors, and students are encouraged to attend classes that focus on string instruments other than their own. In addition, students take weekly private lessons from faculty members and attend master classes presented by renowned guest artists. Performance opportunities abound. Students may audition and perform for MSU symphony and concert orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and regional professional orchestras. The string area at MSU is led by faculty whose impeccable artistry, technical prowess, and extensive teaching and performance experience creates a collaborative and individualized learning environment that fosters excellence. All successful applicants are automatically considered for competitive merit-based music scholarship. Graduate applicants are eligible for graduate assistantship positions in strings as well as fellowships and scholarships (after LIVE auditions only). No supplemental application is required to be considered.
