The program trains students for careers as professional musicians -- performers in classical or jazz music, and composers. After completing the basic curriculum, the student chooses an area of specialization. Students may specialize in composition, jazz, a keyboard instrument, string/harp, guitar, voice, wind instrument, or percussion. They train in solo performance, coached ensemble, and conducted ensemble. Students earning the Bachelor of Music in Performance with a Cello emphasis take courses at the Fred Fox School of Music, which ranks among the country's foremost institutions of higher education in music. Classes include both one-on-one instruction and collaboration in groups. The University of Arizona has offered instruction in music since the late 1800s. Today, its faculty comprises some of the leading artists and performers in the music world. The school presents more than 300 recitals every year, and performing ensembles tour throughout the country. Artists, scholars and clinicians are invited to campus for workshops, lectures and master classes.
