The program trains students for careers as professional musicians -- performers in classical or jazz music, and composers. After completing the basic curriculum, the student chooses an area of specialization. Students may specialize in composition, jazz, a keyboard instrument, string/harp, guitar, voice, wind instrument, or percussion. They train in solo performance, coached ensemble, and conducted ensemble. Improve your technique and performance skills as a flute musician while broadening your understanding of the fundamentals of music. Flute studies at the Fred Fox School of Music include weekly private lessons, a weekly studio master class, small group technique classes, flute pedagogy and more. Along with applied study, students earning the Bachelor of Music in Performance with a Flute emphasis perform solo, chamber, concerto, orchestral and wind ensemble repertoire for live performances, competitions and recordings. They focus on performance objectives, develop important kinesiological habits, condense music theory, history and physiology in a simplified, interpretative way, and train the body's physical performance mechanisms. Students are encouraged to seek national and international recognition through competitions, festival performances and scholarly publications.
