Basic competence in music theory and history is a prerequisite for all graduate degree programs in music. Entering graduate students are required to complete a music theory entrance exam and meet history coursework requirements. Based on exam results and review of the student's transcript, up to 8 points of remedial music theory and/or history coursework may be required.
You must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited four-year US bachelor's degree before beginning your studies at NYU Steinhardt to be considered for admission.

Develop your collaborative skills, working intensely with young artists and faculty in Vocal Performance (Musical Theatre/Classical Voice) and Instrumental Performance, while mentoring with Artist Faculty in Piano Studies. You'll coach with chamber musicians at home on the world's finest concert stages and learn from Broadway professionals. From tuning your harpsichord for Baroque Ensemble to preparing the piano for Contemporary Music, you'll emerge as a versatile professional musician.<br>Explore the musical theatre repertoire while furthering your skills through private study with Artist Faculty in Piano Studies. Gain collaborative insights working with singers and mentors from the Vocal Performance Program, and engage with Broadway professionals in master classes, lectures, and career counseling. Become a versatile professional theatre musician in the heart of the music theatre industry. Your curriculum includes private lessons and course work in music research, history, and literature. While refining your technique, you'll focus on collaborative repertoire, with course work related to diction, vocal pedagogy, and production. For those with an interest in musical theatre, you may select repertoire classes and study music direction. Two degree recitals are required, reflecting your areas of specialization.
