To be admitted to the DDS/MPH dual degree program, students must first successfully submit an application to the College of Dental Medicine. Interested students then must apply and gain acceptance to the Mailman School of Public Health.
Although an early commitment is advisable, students can enter the program at any time during the first 2 years of dental school and have up to two years after graduation from the College of Dental Medicine to complete the requirements for the MPH degree (a minimum of 39 academic credits in public health).
The College of Dental Medicine enrolls a diverse group of approximately 84 outstanding individuals each year into the four-year DDS program. We seek candidates with strong educational backgrounds, well-rounded extracurricular experiences, and skills in leadership and collaboration. Students of all ages and educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply, those with strong higher-level sciences will be given preference due to our biomedical curriculum.
Prerequisites
All students applying to the College of Dental Medicine must have a bachelor's degree from a US accredited college or Canadian institution. Additional requirements include:
Six credits, or the equivalent of one academic year of study, of coursework in English composition or literature or a writing intensive class in a non-English department
A minimum of eight credits, or the equivalent of one academic year of study, in each of the following subject areas (including lab): Physics, biology, inorganic or general chemistry, organic chemistry.
One semester of biochemistry (no lab required)
We also strongly recommend that students have university-level credits in:
Mathematics
Sociology
History
Fine or industrial arts
One or more foreign languages
The College of Dental Medicine accepts students with a wide variety of majors. Applicants who major in non-science fields are required to take all of the prerequisite courses, all applicants are encouraged to take upper-level science courses as time and interests permit.

The College of Dental Medicine partners with Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health to offer a dual degree in dental medicine and public health. Individuals pursuing this course of study receive thorough foundations in the basic biological sciences and clinical dentistry and gain invaluable insights into the complexities of the evolving U.S. health care system. DDS/MPH degree candidates may choose among a number of public health concentrations including epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration and the sociomedical sciences. Students enrolled in the DDS/MPH degree track are uniquely equipped to assume leadership roles when dentistry, medicine, and the health care system interface. They also have a number of career options open to them, graduates of the program serve in administrative posts, the public health service, general practice residencies, specialty residencies, the armed services, and private practice.
