A bachelor's or master's degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders, Speech and Hearing Sciences, or a related field (e.g. Linguistics, Psychology, Education) from a regionally accredited institution.
Applicants from other disciplines may apply. Students admitted to the program from a non-CSD background may be required to take pre-requisite coursework in the basic speech, language, and hearing sciences depending on their career plans and desired area of focus.
Applicants with bachelor's degrees and those from other disciplines are advised to consider whether clinical training will also be required for them to meet their career goals. If so, it may be advisable to complete a clinical training program prior to applying to the Ph.D. program.
GPA of 3.5 or above from previous graduate study.
This is a minimum criterion. Most students admitted to the program have a GPA of 3.8 or higher.
GRE scores at or above the 33rd percentile for Verbal and Quantitative subtests and a 3.5 or better on the Writing subtest, taken within 5 years preceding the application.
This is a minimum criterion. Most students who have been successful in the program have scores that are in the 70th percentile or higher for the Verbal and/or Writing subtests and 50th percentile or higher for the Quantitative subtest.
Students with scores lower than the 33rd percentile may be offered admission on a conditional basis if the letter of intent and letters of recommendation are particularly strong.
Minimum test scores required to determine proficiency are: IELTS - 6.5, TOEFL (iBT – 79, PBT – 550)

The Ph.D. program in Communication Sciences & Disorders combines an exciting and versatile academic curriculum and a variety of rich research opportunities. The program benefits from the world-class resources of the CSD Department. Human resources include experienced scientists in each of the major areas of the speech, language, and hearing sciences. Physical resources include a vast array of laboratory and clinical facilities ranging from wet labs and comparative research to clinical laboratories with state-of-the-art hardware, software, and custom laboratory space. Ph.D. students benefit from discipline-specific as well as multi-disciplinary programs of study tailored to the individual students areas of interest and strength. Strong research collaborations with the School of Aging Studies, the College of Engineering, and the School of Medicine and formal interdisciplinary programs with the Department of Psychology and the School of Education capitalize on the greater USF community to create a uniquely diverse and transformative learning environment.<br><br>The program emphasizes critical thinking, knowledge acquisition, and skill development to prepare the research scientists of tomorrow capable of addressing theoretical and applied issues in laboratory, clinical, and classroom settings. Coursework emphasizes basic and advanced study in the communicative sciences and related disciplines while extensive research experience focuses on the development of the personal programmatic line of research required for success in a research/academic career.
