Bachelor’s degree and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. We do not require a specific undergraduate major; however, we do look closely at your transcript to see if you have taken classes that are relevant for counseling.

Supplemental department Master’s degree application, sent directly to chs2266@syr.edu as an attachment.
A personal statement which defines the applicant’s motivation to seek graduate study and future career ambitions.
3 letters of recommendation from persons who can speak to the applicant’s academic potential and to their personal qualifications for graduate study in counseling. At least 2 of your references must be from current or former academic instructors.
If you graduated more than 10 years ago, references from current or former academic instructors are strongly preferred. Other references should speak to the applicant’s ability to be successful in a graduate school context with details and observations that could transfer into an academic context.

International students: TOEFL Scores, written test 600, computerized test 250, iBT test 100, IELTS 7.0, or Duolingo English Test – this requirement CANNOT be waived.

The M.S. program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares students to enhance the growth and development of all clients, and to offer a broad range of services and interventions in wellness and advocacy.<br>This program in the Department of Counseling and Human Services has a unique and foundational commitment to social justice, culturally relevant skills skills, advocacy, and leadership. Graduates will be able to construct and implement comprehensive needs assessments, collaborative treatment plans, and case notes for diverse clients, and provide a pathway to develop systematic methods of clinical intervention. Regardless of specialty area, all professional counselors focus on wellness, development, prevention, and empowerment. This CACREP-accredited program meets academic requirements for the New York State license in clinical mental health counseling and credentialing as a Nationally Certified Counselor.<br><br>The Clinical Mental Health Counseling master's program requires 60 credits. Most students complete the program full-time in 2 years (including summer), although careful planning with an advisor can allow for part-time study while working, although the program must be completed within 7 years. Classes are usually offered in the afternoons and evenings to work around practicums, internships, and other employment.
