Our master's program in creative writing is based on the principle that writing is a skill that can be learned through practice. Good writers can come from any background. We are a community that cares deeply about literary excellence and about the influence writers can have beyond the world of letters. Whether or not you are already published, we welcome your interest in developing your life as a writer. Admitted students must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university before they enroll.
Complete a Statement of Purpose
In approximately 500 words, explain your interest in and preparation for pursuing graduate study in Creative Writing. Discuss in detail how your graduate work will help you attain your academic and/or professional goals. Consider this statement as another sample of your creative writing and an opportunity to tell us something about yourself that your application might not otherwise show.
Submit Your R'sum or CV
Submit a one to two-page r'sum/curriculum vitae summarizing your academic qualifications, relevant work experience, published writing, volunteer/community work, professional networking, public speaking, and/or any other relevant experiences that may relate to your field of study, including dates and positions held. Please also note any special language or computer skills that you have.
Submit Two Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references are required. Recommendations must be submitted by recommenders directly via the online application portal. Instructions are included in the online application.
Submit College Transcripts
Applicants must upload an unofficial transcript, mark sheet, or academic record for each institution (even if you didnt receive a degree) in the Academic History section of the online application.
Minimum required scores are:

IELTS - 7.0

Our prestigious MFA Creative Writing program is designed to help you develop your writing in workshops and literature seminars led by an internationally recognized faculty and renowned authors. As an MFA student at The New School, you can choose your concentration in Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, or Writing for Children and Young Adults and receive personalized faculty mentorship and faculty and peer critiques. Innovative courses in publishing and multimedia storytelling engage you in the development of literature. Popular graduate minors include Impact Entrepreneurship and Transmedia and Digital Storytelling. Or you can apply to WriteOn NYC, a New Schoolfunded fellowship program providing MFA students with high-quality teaching experience in area middle schools and high schools. All students benefit from evening classes and events, which enable them to work or attend responsibilities during the day while enrolled in a full-time program.
