You are considered a freshman applicant if you will have a high school diploma or GED and have not enrolled at any college or university beyond the summer immediately following your high school graduation.
The information on this page is for:
Undergraduate applicants who plan to study at San Francisco State in F-1 student visa status
Undergraduate applicants who are U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or in another immigration status, and have transcripts from an international institution.
Have a a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) in the 4.0 grading scale or B- average in academic courses completed after 9th grade.
Complete a secondary/high school curriculum that totals 12 years of primary-secondary education, be qualified to enter a university in your home country and have a good scholastic record from an accredited/recognized school.

Transcripts are required for each high school you attended.
If you are currently in the final year of high school, we need to see grades through your first semester (or second trimester) of year 12.
If you already completed high school, we need to see your complete high school transcript and proof of high school graduation.
If your school does not issue transcripts in English, we will need a word-for-word certified English translation.
We do not accept credential evaluations from third-party companies.
If you are admitted, you will be required to submit official, final transcripts at a later date.
Any documents submitted to SF State become the property of the University and will not be returned

The Department of Creative Writing offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The three degree programs emphasize the primary importance of the study and practice of imaginative writing in the genres of creative nonfiction, fiction, literary translation, playwriting, and poetry. All three degree programs combine an intense workshop requirement and a variety of special topic creative process classes with requirements in the English Department. The core literature classes assure that students will continue to absorb and be trained in a study of the best literature of the past. In Creative Writing classes, students work with an active, publishing faculty. They learn by vigorous practice, by focused studies of craft, and by extensive reading, analysis, and discussion of their work, as well as that of published authors. Creative Work: Students will produce a publishable written creative work. Professional preparation for fields related to literature and/or creative writing: Includes skills in publishing, writing, teaching, editing, book arts, and arts management.
