Writing Sample**
*Statement of Purpose: Describe your current or planned genre focus and aesthetic aims, and explain how both are influenced by your past experiences as a reader and writer of literature.
**Writing sample:
Prose: Submission cannot exceed 25 pages.
Poem: 12 poems not exceeding 15 pages. Each poem must be submitted on a separate page.
Applicants must meet the minimum university requirements for graduate study. Applications from candidates who have majored in any undergraduate field will be considered, though a major in literature is desirable. Admission is based on samples of previous writing (25 pages of prose or 15 pages of poetry), academic record, and two letters of recommendation.
Programs typically do not set minimum scores for the GRE. Based on the strength of other aspects of their file as determined by the admissions committee, applicants with GPAs below 3.0 may be considered for admission with approval of the CAS Office of Graduate Affairs. No numerical score (GRE or GPA) guarantees admission.
The minimum acceptable scores on the TOEFL exam is 100 for the internet test (95 for the online Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program). The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7.0. there is no department code or institutional code for IELTS.

For more than 30 years, writers have come to American University to develop their work and exchange ideas in the District's only creative writing MFA program. Our graduate workshops provide a rigorous yet supportive environment where students explore a range of approaches to the art and craft of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. As an MFA student at American, you are free to pursue a single genre or explore several. You will acquire a deeper understanding of your own work and hone your skills in a collaborative setting.<br><br>This two-year, 36-credit-hour MFA program integrates writing, literary journalism, translation, and the study of literature to prepare students for a range of career possibilities. Write, give feedback, and receive guidance from a close-knit community of respectful peers and faculty. In the MFA program, you'll find lawyers, military veterans, musicians, teachers, and business executives who are passionate about the written word.
