The Creative Writing concentration trains students in writing imaginatively for professional publication. Students strengthen their creative skills in a variety of genres through a series of writing workshops, which they take alongside courses in literary history and analysis. They acquire a solid grounding in literary forms, they learn to think critically and creatively about how writers represent the material of everyday life, they gain insight into writing and audience through the intense study of style, voice, and genre, and they develop an understanding of the standards by which literary works are judged. In the English program, you will study the major authors, works, genres and literary movements in the British and American traditions, approaching these texts both analytically and historically. Develop your skills in analysis, interpretation and writing by studying British and American literatures, as well as important works in English from around the world. The English program provides a well-rounded education where you will develop critical and creative thinking skills by examining texts analytically, historically and from multiple points of view. You will also develop a unique voice, express yourself clearly in speaking and writing, and become an articulate interpreter and contributor to your culture.
