Applicants to the Creative Writing stream should also submit a recent and representative creative writing sample of at least 10 pages.
A GPA of at least 3.7 (A-) in an MA in English or MFA in Creative Writing is required for admission to the PhD program. Applicants to the Direct-Entry PhD must have a GPA of at least 4.0 in the final two years of the BA Honours English. A statement of interest, at least one page long, outlining their preferred area of study

UNB's celebrated English graduate programs offer both creative writing and academic streams of study, helping students reach both their creative and critical potential. Students feel particularly welcome because of our small class sizes. They gain personal support and invaluable feedback from nationally-acclaimed professors and have opportunities to work with them on research and creative projects and on departmental publications, including Canada's longest continuously published literary journal. The department boasts talented practitioners and instructors in all major genres of creative writing - fiction, poetry, playwriting and screenwriting - as well as expertise in non-fiction and travel writing.Students in the creative writing stream take a combination of academic and creative courses and write a book-length creative thesis in a genre of their choice.Students in the 12-month program will normally take 21 credit hours (ch) of academic graduate courses, the 6 ch research methods course (Engl 6100), and the Advanced Research Project (Engl 6994). Students will take 3 academic courses during the Fall term, 3 courses during the Winter term, and 1 academic course in the Summer. English 6100 will be completed during the Fall and Winter terms, and the ''Advanced Research Project'' will be completed during the Summer session.
