To qualify for admission, an applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale for the last two undergraduate years. Prospective students must apply online through our departmental Web site (see below for details). The applicant should have a strong background in biological sciences. Courses in statistics, physics, chemistry through organic chemistry, mathematics through calculus, and computer applications are recommended. For applicants whose native language is not English, verbal communication with a faculty member is required so that the faculty member can assess verbal skills.

Three Letters of Recommendation
Evaluations of applicants for the PhD program are based on: previous research experience, motivations for research, alignment with faculty, evidence of ability to develop hypothesis-driven questions, research rationale, quality of reference letters about the applicant's intellectual capacity, resilience, and ability to work independently and as part of teams. For fellowship applications, applicants should have publications, high GPAs.

Whether formal primary and secondary school instruction is primarily conducted in English in the country. TOEFL/IELTS scores (International Students only).
TOEFL Internet Based test score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section
Paper-based test (taken July 2017 or later) - a combined total of the 3 sections evaluated must be 60 or greater
The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS Academic Test is 6.5. International applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test

Entomology is the study of insects, the predominant species on Earth. With more than a million known species, insects significantly affect our world. The Department of Entomology conducts innovative research in this realm, leading to improved human and animal health, quality of life, and sustainability of our food and ecosystems.<br>The Department of Entomology is committed to providing students opportunities with an international focus. Students may take courses and conduct research as part of their graduate program or earn international credentials through dual-title degrees.<br>The degree of Doctor of Philosophy signifies high scholastic achievement and demonstrated capability to perform independent research. Five academic years of full time graduate work beyond the bachelor's degree are often required, four years is more typical for students that have earned a Master degree. Some of this work may be completed off-campus or on a part-time basis. However, between the time of acceptance as a candidate and completing the degree requirements, the student must spend two academic sessions in residence within a twelve-month period.
