课程简介
Biologists help us to better understand the needs of our planet and its inhabitants and to discover the solutions to the problems facing both. The Biological Sciences department at Binghamton University is designed for students to develop the ability to carry out scientific investigation, understand and critically evaluate biological information, discuss and communicate biological concepts accurately, effectively and concisely, and apply biological training to careers. Students can tailor their focus to cell and molecular biology or ecology and evolution. Our faculty support interdisciplinary programs in Evolutionary Studies (EvoS), integrative neuroscience and biochemistry. The Program in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior (EEB) provides graduate students with a set of conceptual and methodological tools for studying a diversity of subjects, ranging from macroevolution to microevolution, from the behavior of single organisms to the dynamics of large-scale ecosystems, from proximate mechanisms to ultimate causation, and from basic scientific research to practical applications. All students who enter the EEB program take a two-semester course sequence that covers the basic principles of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior at an advanced introductory level. This experience provides a common core of knowledge, enables students to get to know each other, and to learn about the research programs of numerous faculty in addition to their own advisor. It is a strength of our program that we provide a breadth of training in addition to a research specialization. This is important because it is common for EEB scientists to change the organisms and specific subjects they study during the course of their careers, to understand the basic ecological, evolutionary, and behavioral principles that apply to all organisms and subjects.
