For admission to the Ecology Graduate Program, an undergraduate degree is required in:
a natural science (eg., physics, chemistry, biology, botany, zoology, geology),
a social science (eg., anthropology, sociology, or economics),
a mathematical area (eg., statistics, mathematics, or systems analysis),
an engineering area,
or environmental science.
One unofficial transcript from each university attended must be uploaded within the application.
The email addresses of three recommenders are required within the application for electronic submission.
Three current letters of recommendation from persons qualified to evaluate your academic and professional qualifications are required.
Statement of purpose
A bachelor's degree (based on a four-year curriculum) completed before graduate study begins or its international equivalent with an accredited institution an average grade of B (cumulative GPA 3.0) or better. One unofficial transcript from each university attended must be uploaded within the application. All unofficial transcripts must be uploaded to your application in order for your application to be reviewed. Please do not mail transcripts as part of your admission application; we only accept unofficial uploads for application evaluation. The Environment, Ecology and Energy Program offers graduate degrees in Ecology at the M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. The Master of Science degree requires independent research and a thesis, while the Master of Arts degree requires a written literature review report. Master's students wishing to pursue a subsequent Ph.D. degree following completion of all requirements for the master's degree must petition the Program to submit to the UNC Graduate School the Permission to Continue Beyond the Master s Degree form. Students may elect to be admitted directly to the Ph.D. program, depending upon the recommendation of the Graduate Admissions Committee.<br>We explore systems on our planet through basic research and applied solutions. As such, we bring together natural and social sciences to propel North Carolina as a leader in local and global environmental research and innovation. We elevate research into understanding by investigating the diverse and interactive systems that regulate the environment, including consequences for humans and other organisms. We are committed to educating students to improve understanding for future generations.
