At least three letters of recommendation are required. The online application system will require you to submit letter writer names and email addresses. Electronic copies of transcripts are required from each college or university that you have attended, use the online application system to submit all electronic transcripts. If you are offered admission to Rice, you will be required to have official copies of each transcript mailed directly to the department. Applicants may optionally (but are not required to) submit scores for the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) general exam. The ETS school code for Rice is 6609. GRE subject test scores are not required. Applicants who are foreign nationals or whose native language is not English must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test and must score at least 90 on the iBT TOEFL or at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL. For those students who choose to take the IELTS in lieu of TOEFL, the minimum score is 7. Statement of Purpose, CV/Resume, In general, applicants should have at least a 3.0 (B) grade point average, or the equivalent, in their undergraduate work.

Computational biology and bioinformatics research in the Department of Computer Science spans biological systems from individual genes, proteins, and cells, to networks of interacting molecules, to species and microbial communities. The research projects include protein structure prediction, protein binding and interaction networks, comparative genomics, microbial forensics, and phylogenomics. Research projects are conducted on a wide array of biological systems and species, including, but not limited to, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.), microbiomes, and eukaryotic species.
