The Department of Biology provides undergraduate and graduate programs covering the breadth of biology. Course work ranges from introductory biology to specialized courses in broad disciplines of biology. The department has grouped courses into concentrations to help advise students of appropriate programs of study in various biology disciplines. Each concentration provides a breadth of background in basic biological concepts as well as depth in the specific discipline. Students should consult with an advisor early in their program of study to design an individualized program within the concentration of interest.<br>Currently SF STATE Biology Department is submitting a renewal application for a new CIRM EDUC2 RFA under Prop 14. The trainees will be accepted into Master of Science in Biomedical Science, Concentration in Stem Cell Science (Science Master's Bridges Program). The Stem Cell Science Master's Bridges Program aims to prepare competent and committed laboratory professionals for both academia and industry to accelerate the discovery, development and delivery of stem cell, gene therapy and related technologies for improving human health. The Science Master's Bridges Program provides additional course work in business and is tailored towards students interested in pursuing a position in the biotechnology sector or advanced academic training upon graduation. In the first year of the program, CIRM Science Master's Bridges trainees will take core courses at SF STATE to build a strong foundation in stem cell science. The second year of the program, funded by the CIRM fellowship, is devoted to trainee's internship research project using stem cells and/or gene therapy at one of our host institutions or affiliated stem cell companies across the Bay Area. At the end of their second year of training, Science Master's Bridges trainees, completing a final master project report written in the form of a manuscript as well as an oral defense, will become competent ready-to-start life science professionals.
