Microbiology programs are designed to give students a good understanding of microorganisms, including diversity, ecology, physiology, molecular genetics, current approaches in bacterial genomics/proteomics, and microbial associations with animal hosts and the environments. Such knowledge will provide the basis for further work with microbes in medicine, agricultural industries (including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage) and the environment (surveillance and bioremediation).<br>In this major, you will study how micro-organisms interact with and impact the world around us, and explore the evolving diversity of bacteria, viruses, archaea, and fungi. Applications of microbiology range from antibiotic development and resistance to the relevance of the gut micro-flora in diseases, to yeast production for beverage and food development.<br>Explore varied topics throughout the program, from deep sea ecosystems, or the normal microbial inhabitants of the human body, to practical matters of public health.In your upper years, you have the opportunity to access some of the University of Guelph's outstanding research labs and facilities through coursework or independent research projects.With optional co-op, discover the medical, industrial and environmental impacts of microorganisms and learn about the methods used to study and utilize them for biotechnology or bioremediation.
