The minimum requirements for admission to the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's (FoMD's) Graduate Programs (See FoMD Graduate Programs) are outlined below. Admissions to FoMD graduate programs are made on a competitive basis. Though an applicant may satisfy the minimum admission requirements, acceptance into a graduate program is not guaranteed. The decision to admit an applicant to a graduate program is made by the department and program. the minimum Admission Grade Point Average (AGPA) required for admission to a graduate program is 3.0, equivalently, a letter grade B, on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent standing.
Graduate program entrance requirements for FoMD Graduate Programs are defined at two different levels:
The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) sets the minimum entrance requirements that must be met by all graduate students at the UofA, regardless of program (See GPS Graduate Admissions).
FoMD has entrance requirements over and above those set by GPS that must be met by graduate students in all the FoMD graduate programs. The following documents are required to be accepted into a graduate program:
Three letters of references with at least two from academic sources to be submitted via the online portal.
Statement of research interests to be submitted via the online portal.
Curriculum Vitae to be submitted via the online portal.
Transcripts to be submitted via the online portal.
Supervisor Confirmation and Applicant Funding Information form.
The minimum English language proficiency test scores required for admission into the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's Graduate Programs are:
TOEFL (internet-based): A minimum overall score of 95 with a minimum of 21 on each individual skill area.
Academic IELTS: A minimum overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each band.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences-Obstetrics and Gynecology.<br><br>The graduate program provides multi-disciplinary research opportunities in women's health. At both the MSc and PhD levels, prospective students can apply directly to our programs and if qualified, may also choose to apply at the same time to the highly competitive Graduate Program in Maternal and Child Health (MatCH). The Obstetrics & Gynecology Graduate Program is coordinated by Dr. Denise Hemmings, a Professor in our Division of Reproductive Sciences.<br><br>Several of our department members have cross-appointments to departments in the basic medical sciences, including Physiology, Medical Microbiology & Immunology and Oncology. Graduate programs leading to the MSc or PhD degree may also be offered through these departments. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences-Obstetrics and Gynecology either as part of a post-MD training program or as an independent degree program for prospective students proceeding from an undergraduate or a Master of Science degree. Research may be carried out in any of the department laboratories or clinical facilities in a variety of disciplines related to women's health from preconception to post-menopause. Pregnancy-related research can also include studies of both male and female offspring. Research includes basic science, epidemiology and clinical-based approaches.
