Undergraduate degree: 2:2 or equivalent in Mathematics. We also accept combined honours degrees where Mathematics makes up at least 50% of the award. If your undergraduate degree is not in Mathematics or a related subject, we may still be able to offer you a place if you also have a postgraduate degree in Mathematics or Grade B in A level Mathematics. If your undergraduate degree is not at least 50% Mathematics, we may require you to undertake a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course prior to starting your PGCE. Additional requirements: GCSE Mathematics grade 4 (C); GCSE English grade 4 (C). This is in addition to any other English language requirements you may need to fulfil. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5, minimum 6.0 in each component, TOEFL 87, minimum 21 in each component.

This course will prepare you to teach National Curriculum mathematics at KS3 and KS4 (11-16). Learn to be an effective maths teacher, gaining the key skills you'll need to help your students succeed. Get to grips with up-to-date thinking and the latest research into teaching and learning. You can choose to study this course as a University of York PGCE trainee or through our partnership with Pathfinder Teaching School Hub. The following routes are open to you: <br><br>University of York core <br>PGCE Pathfinder Teaching School Hub <br>Pathfinder trainees work with University of York PGCE trainees at the University for Curriculum Area sessions. Whole School Issues sessions are usually delivered in the partner school. <br>Each route has a different course code and institution code. Please see our information on applying for details. The York PGCE is designed to ensure that your study at the University and your practical experience in schools work together to help you develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to be a successful teacher. <br><br>Throughout the course, youll develop and consolidate your understanding of what constitutes effective teaching.<br><br>Youll spend two thirds of your learning time in school settings, with the rest of your time spent at the University receiving training. While on placement, you'll receive ongoing, regular support from your tutors when they visit you in school to observe you teach and help you reflect on your developing practice.<br><br>There are sessions that are particularly important for mathematics teachers. These include practical work, problem solving and open-ended investigative work, developing mastery along with deeper mathematical reasoning skills, the use of calculators and computers and stronger links with other subjects and the world of work. We will look at these areas in a range of contexts, including at a post 16 level. <br><br>This course is worth 60 Masters-level credits, which you can put towards a Masters degree through Accreditation of Prior Credited Learning (APCL).
