A-levels: ABB, including Mathematics
Please note we are unable to accept A-level Use of Mathematics in place of A-level Mathematics
BTEC: DDD, only in conjunction with A-level Mathematics.
IB: 32 points or three Higher Level certificates with 655. Either must include Higher Level Mathematics grade 5. We will accept 5 in either Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Higher Level Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation.
We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programmes at both Higher and Standard Level. Exact offer levels will vary depending on the range of subjects being taken at higher and standard level, and the course applied for. Please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office for more information.
Access to HE Diploma: 15 level 3 credits at Distinction and 30 level 3 credits at Merit, only in conjunction with A-level Mathematics.
T-levels: Distinction, only in conjunction with A-level Mathematics.
IELTS - 6.0 overall
TOEFL IBT - 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing

Mathematics is the language that underpins the rest of science. At Essex, Mathematics has truly broad reach, we are working on projects ranging from the economic impMathematics provides the logical foundations on which all of science, engineering and technology are built. Our BSc Mathematics course gives you the chance to study both fundamental topics and their modern applications, including:<br>Pure mathematics, including geometry, algebra, analysis and number theory<br>Applied topics such as mathematical physics, cryptography, mathematical modelling, differential equations and dynamical systems<br>Statistical, financial and analytical methods such as optimisation and the study of riskact of the behaviour of dairy cows, to understanding crowd behaviour through modelling a zombie apocalypse, to circular Sudoku and other puzzles. Our Department of Mathematical Sciences is genuinely innovative and student-focused. Our interdisciplinary research recognises that mathematics, including what can be very abstract mathematics, is an essential part of research in many other disciplines. You therefore can gain an exceptional range of knowledge and skills that are currently in demand in mathematically oriented employment, in business, commerce, industry, government service, education and in the wider economy.<br><br>As well as these mathematical topics, your degree will develop your programming skills in languages such as Python and SQL, and you will learn to solve sophisticated problems using computational toolkits such as Matlab, Maple and R.<br><br>Our department recognises the stand-alone and interdisciplinary aspects of mathematics, and your degree provides an exceptional range of in-demand transferrable skills for mathematically oriented careers, from business, to finance and commerce, industry, research, government, education and beyond. All our mathematical sciences degrees feature an employability component in every year, explicitly training sought-after skills and incorporating careers day events and seminars from speakers in industry.
