To apply to the program, you must meet one of the following:
Have completed an LLM degree at the University of Iowa or at another law school of comparable rigor, or be currently enrolled in such a program and on track to receive the LLM degree before starting the SJD program.
Have completed a JD degree in the United States, or be currently enrolled in a JD program and on track to receive the JD degree before starting the SJD program.
TOEFL: This exam is not required but documentation of English capability strengthens your application.
Letters of recommendation: You must submit three letters of recommendation. At least two should be from law professors who can comment on your critical thinking, writing skills, and potential for success in writing a doctoral dissertation.
Official Transcripts: Official copies of academic records of coursework completed in colleges, universities, technical institutes, and professional institutions are required, in English, regardless of the duration of study or whether you obtained a degree. The College of Law participates in LSAC's Credential Assembly Service. You are responsible for submitting to LSAC an official transcript from each institution you have attended.

The SJD program at the University of Iowa College of Law is intended for those who wish to conduct original and advanced legal research under faculty supervision. SJD students are expected to carry out legal research and writing which makes a significant and original contribution to the legal literature. The SJD dissertation must be of publishable quality and must provide lawyers, scholars, and governmental officials with a useful understanding, not previously available, of a particular area of law. The SJD programs has other advantages at Iowa: As a member of our academic community, you will interact with our students and faculty, participate in faculty workshops, and present your own work from comment. You will be able to conduct your research at the Iowa Law library, one of the three largest academic law libraries in the country with vast collections of international, comparative, and foreign law materials, including 4,500 volumes of rare books on British, US, French, and German law. Reference librarians specially trained in foreign, comparative, and international law research can assist you with research. The Iowa Law Writing Resource Center is available to help with legal writing as you develop your publishable dissertation. The University of Iowa is a top public university with world-renowned specialties in fiction and non-fiction writing, business, engineering, health sciences, and liberal arts. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with scholars from other disciplines.
