The Criminology, Law and Society Specialist is intended for students who wish to go on to graduate studies in this or a similar area. The Major provides a broad foundation for students who may have an academic or civic interest in law, crime and criminal justice and might include:students who at a later stage may wish to pursue more advanced work in areas related to, for example, criminology, law or social work;students wanting to know more about the topics of the sociology of crime, particularly as these become issues of public policy.Sociology at UTM is one of the highest ranked sociology departments in the world, particularly in the area of law and society and criminology (other areas of strength include sociology of gender, sociology of culture and food, and the sociology of inequality). Our research and teaching expertise covers a diverse range of topics that are central to understanding and explaining the state of society and social change. At the undergraduate level, we offer Specialist, Major, and Minor programs in Sociology, and Specialist and Major programs in Criminology, Law & Society. As part of the tri-campus graduate department of Sociology, we also offer training for MA and PhD students through teaching and advising. The graduate program is administered at the downtown campus.
