To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements:
You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences. A weighted GPA takes into account the extra difficulty of honors, AP or IB classes.
If you are not admissible, you will be offered enrollment to a Nevada NSHE Community College. You will be offered admission to a Nevada university once you have completed a minimum of 24 college transferable semester credits at a NSHE Community College and have a 2.5 GPA in all your coursework.
If you are a student who does not meet our academic GPA requirements, but have graduated with an Advanced Diploma from a Nevada high school, you will be granted admission to the University. You must also meet the 13 core course requirements in English, mathematics, social studies and natural sciences to be considered for admission.
You must submit your final, official high school transcripts to support your application for admission.

Mining engineering is perhaps the broadest of engineering disciplines, and our graduates are versatile problem solvers.As a first-year student, you'll start with foundational courses such as calculus, English, chemistry, geology, introductory mining and physics.As you move through the program, your courses will focus on specific mining topics, covering all aspects of mining engineering: mine planning, design, operation, mine automation and robotics and mine closure. These courses include fundamentals engineering topics such as thermodynamics, circuits, hydraulics and materials. You'll also study topics such as industrial health and safety, mineral economics and environmentally sustainable mining.<br><br><br>Learning outcomes<br><br>Students majoring in mining engineering learn to:<br><br> Demonstrate proficiency in the mathematics, science, and engineering areas necessary to identify, formulate, and solve practical engineering problems. The program will maintain compliance with ABET Accreditation<br> Demonstrate proficiency in engineering topics related to surface and underground mining<br> Demonstrate the ability to plan and design a technically sound mine in an ethically, environmentally, and socially responsible manner<br> Communicate plans, designs, and operational practices to mine representatives, regulators, and the public<br> Prepare for entry-level positions in the operations and management of mines, or for graduate-level study in engineering
