Students seeking admission to a graduate program in the School of Engineering must have received a bachelors degree in engineering, science, mathematics, or a related field from an accredited institution and must satisfy all general university requirements.
Admission for those seeking a master's degree or graduate certificate is typically based on undergraduate record and may also consider relevant work experience and motivation towards study in the program in question as demonstrated by the applicant's personal statement. Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is typically required, and students must maintain a 3.0 GPA during graduate study to remain in good standing. Students may choose either a Master's Thesis Option or Non-Thesis Option (see the Graduate Programs page for more information).

Minimally accepted TOEFL scores, when applying for graduate programs, are 550-paper, 213-computer, and 80 Internet. Students taking the TOEFL should have at least 20 out of 30 in each of the TOEFL subcategories. The minimally accepted graduate IELTS score is 6.5. Individual IELTS test module scores are also reviewed in addition to the overall IELTS score.

The master's degree program in materials science and engineering is especially designed to serve the needs of the technical population in Washington, D.C. The program emphasizes advances in existing and emerging technologies in materials science which include:<br><br>nanotechnology<br>composite materials<br>carbon nanotube-based materials and sensors<br>biomaterials<br>glasses, ceramics, and metallurgy<br>magnetic and optical materials<br>computational materials science<br>The curriculum will lead to the awarding of the degree of Master of Science (M.S.) in Materials Science and Engineering.<br><br>Candidates for the master's degree in MSE must complete a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours of graduate work. Two curricular options are available for completion of the master's degree in MSE, either through coursework or through thesis.
