Applicants may have undergraduate degrees in engineering, or other disciplines. All applicants are expected to have completed the necessary prerequisites to begin the core curriculum for the degree program of interest.

TOEFL scores are required for International students. CBEE does not accept IELTS scores in place of TOEFL for English language proficiency. However, for international students who have obtained a BS or MS degree from a US institution, this requirement is automatically waived. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score established by the university for admission into all programs is 550 for the paper-based test and 213 for the computer- based test (Graduate Admissions Policy).
The Graduate School has a minimum TOEFL score of 80, but certain academic programs may require a higher score. The IELTS minimum is a total score of 6.5 for students wishing to study at UMBC.

The Environmental Engineering (ENEN) Program emphasizes research in environmental engineering and water resources. Environmental engineers identify and design solutions for environmental problems, such as providing safe drinking water, treating and safely disposing of wastes, controlling water pollution, maintaining air quality and remediating contaminated sites. Water resources engineering is a profession that deals with the use, management and conservation of natural water resources above and below ground surface to assure availability and affordability of safe and clean sources of water for society.
