Students having a Master's degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering from an accredited school are eligible for regular admission to graduate study in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering if their grade point is 3.3 or above (based on a 4.0 scale) during the graduate program. Students are allowed to apply for the Doctoral Program directly after receiving a bachelor's degree if their graduate point average is 3.3 or above (based on a 4.0 scale) in their undergraduate study.

All students applying for admission to the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Program must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Only scores from exams taken within the previous two years and reported directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to New Mexico State University will be accepted. The suggested GRE score for students applying for graduate program is: Verbal + Quantitative > 294 (new scale) or > 1000 (old scale). The department graduate screening committee will not review application materials with GRE scores reported. The test scores need to send directly to the Graduate School. To be considered for admission to New Mexico State University, all international students must submit an official score of 550 or above on the paper-based, or 79 on the internet-based The TOEFL requirement may also be waived for students who have a current and official IELTS score of 6.5 or above.

This guide explains some of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The information provided here supplements the NMSU Graduate School requirements for Doctoral Degrees, which are the minimum requirements. Thermal Sciences and energy research in the department encompasses the areas of thermodynamics, nano- to macro-scale heat transfer with and without phase change, mass transfer, fluid dynamics, physics, materials, and engineered and tailored surfaces. Some of the current research thrusts are in renewable and alternative energy, hypersonics, hydrogen power, water desalination, thermal management, and long-duration space transportation.
