Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field of study which engages large-scale analysis and high-throughput screening. Combining cells, engineering, and materials methods, tissue engineering uses suitable biochemical and physiochemical factors to both improve and replace biological tissues. The discipline involves the use of a tissue scaffold for the formation or fabrication of new viable tissue. The practice is typically associated with applications that repair or replace portions of (or whole) tissues that require certain mechanical and structural properties for proper functioning. Tissue engineering projects at BEAM include tissue regeneration and stem cell research, the 3D printing of biomaterials, tissue construction to probe cellular response, and using tissue-engineered models for tumor analysis.
