In your studies you will develop advanced practical skills and theoretical understanding of the generation, transmission, distribution and use of electrical energy, and computer networking, communications, control systems, and digital electronics. You'll work alongside other engineering students on a major industry project in your final year. You may also be eligible for a full semester industry internship. While you study you'll have access to our state-of-the-art engineering spaces including the Engineering Mechatronics Lab, Experience One Studio, and the Experiential Learning Suite.Position yourself at the forefront of technology, with a popular degree that gives you a broad range of career options. Electrical engineers focus on energy and information, designing and operating devices, equipment, technology, services and systems. You will apply engineering theory to real-world challenges, becoming skilled in electrical generation systems, renewable energy sources, electric and autonomous vehicles, and robotics and consumer products. As well as a 12-week work placement, there will be lots of opportunities to learn by practical example, with guest lecturers from industry, simulated business environments and site visits to industrial facilities.

In your first year you will develop a strong, general foundation in engineering. As your studies progress, you will learn about the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy, and about computer networking, control systems, and digital electronics. In the compulsory 12-week industry placement you'll get to use the knowledge and skills you've learned in a work environment. At least half of the honours year involves a major project. Armed with new knowledge and skills, using the latest design tools, and mentored by engineering academic staff, our honours students develop innovative products to advance technology. Recently for example, students worked on an instrumented rowing simulator for elite athletes.

Career outcomes - :

electrical design engineer: creating solutions ranging from small component designs to large-scale systems, working on all stages of design for electrical services, from early research and development through to detailed design, installation and final commissioning
electrical engineer: designing and developing electrical products, systems and components by studying customer requirements, researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials, developing manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for building and assembling
commissioning engineer: commissioning and overseeing the installation of systems, plant and equipment, testing facilities, equipment and plants to make sure they function correctly
