Physics is the most fundamental science. It's also an integral part of many other disciplines, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, and earth science. Whether you enroll in the traditional physics major or choose a concentration in astrophysics, you'll pursue a rigorous lab-based curriculum on campus at Suffolk and at study abroad locations around the world. With a physics major, you can study the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest particles. Physics incorporates other sciences, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, and engineering. With this versatile degree, your job search will have forward momentum. Hands-On Learning You'll take courses in classical and quantum mechanics, electricity and magnetism, electronics, and modern physics. Many graduates go on to careers as science educators or as physicists in industry, national and international labs, and others pursue engineering. Because our curriculum is lab-based, you'll work closely with other students and professors. We encourage you to participate in student-faculty research teams. You'll have opportunities to join small teams working with faculty on projects ranging from neutron scattering at nearby Massachusetts General Hospital, to nanoscience using an atomic force microscope, to augmented and virtual reality using Hololens and Oculus Quests in the Multiple Realities Team and machine learning with neural net controlled robots. Recent projects have focused on nuclear physics and neutron activation, nanoscience, black holes, and magnetic levitation. Students regularly present their research at the national American Physical Society conference.
