The selection of students admitted to the Department of Applied Physics is based on the student's academic record (particularly in the sciences) and research experience, the letters of recommendation,, the scores on the Graduate Record Examination (verbal, quantitative, analytical, and physics advanced test) and TOEFL if appropriate, and the statement of purpose. The advanced test must be taken in the physics subject area and is required only for PhD applicants. A student may apply for the coterminal B.S. and M.S. program after 120 units are completed and they must be accepted into our program at least one quarter before receiving their B.S. degree.
Two original transcripts from each of the previous institutions of higher learning attended.

Statement of purpose
The GRE is optional (verbal, quantitative, analytical, and Physics subject). If one chooses to take exams, use Code 4704 for the Institutional Code. A Department Code is not needed.

The purpose of the master's program is to further develop knowledge and skills in applied physics and to prepare students for a professional career or doctoral studies. This is achieved through completion of courses, in the primary field as well as related areas, and experience with independent work and specialization. 45 units of completed course work in science and/or engineering at Stanford are required for the MS degree. There is no thesis component in the MS program. There is no financial assistance from the Department or the University for students enrolled only in the terminal MS program. A student pursuing a doctoral program may file for an MS degree en route to the PhD. Deadline for applying for 2019 admission: December 12, 2018. We admit for the autumn quarter only.
