A Bachelor's degree, a teaching certificate, and teaching experience.
GRE scores are not required for admission.
Applicants should have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point grading scale in their B.S. course work or any previous graduate courses. (Applicants with an appropriate level of knowledge and professional experience are strongly encouraged to apply.)

The Graduate School has a minimum TOEFL score of 80, but certain academic programs may require a higher score. The IELTS minimum is a total score of 6.5 for students wishing to study at UMBC. A minimum score of 53 is required on the PTE Academic test. International applicants are required to provide an official English language transcript and a native language transcript from each post-secondary institution attended. Each set of documents must list subjects studied, grades or marks received and rank in class or division.

Students obtaining an MAE at UMBC can focus their coursework in various mathematics, science and STEM disciplines. All MAE degree concentrations focus on teacher research and leadership. Program projects and assignments focus on direct applications to teachers' classrooms or schools. The Master of Arts in Education curriculum consists of 12 courses (36 credits). If pursuing the computer science, mathematics, or STEM content area, the program is offered fully online.
