Students are admitted into the MAE on the basis of scholastically competitive criteria. Requirements for admission to graduate study are listed in the Graduate Studies section of the catalog. Note that there are core requirements AND specialty area requirements. Admission to the Secondary (Math, Science, History, English) and K-12 (Music, French, Spanish, Health and Exercise Science) MAE programs is a multi-step process: recommendation of the faculty and Department Chair in the specialty area, recommendation of the Department Chair in Education, and recommendation from the Dean of School of Health Sciences and Education. Elementary and Special Education have a direct admission policy for Truman State University undergraduates with four (4) gateways. Secondary and K-12 Core requirements for admission are:

a strong liberal arts and sciences baccalaureate degree with at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA (3.0 GPA preferred),
three letters of recommendation submitted, Elementary and Special Education Gateways for admission are:

Have an academic plan on file
Complete ED 393 Clinical Experiences in Teaching with a grade of B or higher and ED 394 Experience in Classroom Teaching with a P.
Have an overall undergraduate GPA of 2.75 prior to taking ED608.
Complete an online form via TruView. Interviews for any applicant may take place at the discretion of the MAE program-area faculty in order to provide clarification on any of the required qualifications. Furthermore, students who did not earn undergraduate degrees at Truman will have the additional criteria of:

Faculty review of transcripts to ensure compliance with the proposed gateways in conjunction with the Education Certification Analyst/Advisor and the Office of the Registrar
Interview with the faculty prior to enrollment in ED or SED 608 to ascertain if you are ready for the rigors of the program and that you have both the desire and the foundational knowledge to be successful teachers. For full admission, Truman must receive an official or certified copy of your transcripts from each school you have previously attended. This includes high schools, secondary schools, and universities. Submit Official English Proficiency Scores: Truman requires a minimum overall score of:
• 79 for TOEFL (iBT)
• 6.0 for IELTS , TOEFL (550 or above on the paper-based TOEFL) Hold a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
