The Music Education Concentration is designed to help practicing music educators in school and community contexts improve their professional practice as music educators. Practicing music teachers work in a wide and ever-expanding variety of contexts: elementary classroom music, secondary general music classes that might include music technology, keyboard, guitar, music theory, music history, and interdisciplinary collaborations, and an evolving array of large and small ensembles including choral, wind band, string, jazz, gospel, rock, and other groups. Our mission is to support music educators who are informed by best practices in the educational field, and who possess a flexible and multidimensional musicianship. In addition, our graduates are able to envision and enact multiple paradigms for school-based music education. The Music Education Concentration is offered as a concentration under the 33-credit, non-certification Education M.S. degree program. This concentration will be most attractive to certified public school music teachers and music educators working in community music contexts who are interested in a career-focused graduate degree that is individually designed and professionally specific.
