Graduate students admitted to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) doctoral degree program should have:
A master's degree awarded by an accredited college or university (minimum 3.0 GPA).
Submitted scores on the GRE exam for the Ph.D. degree
A record of prior successful educational achievement and future potential for graduate study at the doctoral level as evidenced by transcripts and three letters of recommendation.
A stated career goal of becoming a teacher educator in the field of career and technical education or a professor at a small college/university related to the content of a given CTE program area
A demonstrated record of past experience related to the individual's career goal (Note: Applicants with a teacher education career goal must have at least two years of teaching experience at the secondary level and/or community college level in one of the fields included in CTE.) Applicants with a collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, technical professional, or equivalent teaching license in a CTE field is preferred. Provisional or alternative licenses are not equivalent.
Clear evidence of potential for the development of superior communication skills in the areas of listening, writing, and speaking.
Recommendations for admission by a two-person interview team.
Official Transcripts- Include a scanned copy of your transcripts with your online application, then arrange for an official copy to be sent to both Graduate Admissions and School of Education after you receive an offer of admission.

Department Graduate Testing Requirements

Official GRE is required for Career and Technical Education (Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instructions). Please have the testing agency send official scores to Virginia Tech Graduate School, code 5859.
Letters of Recommendation- Three letters of recommendation are required for Career and Technical Education (Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instructions).
Writing Sample- During the past decade, several significant issues have been raised about the implementation and improvement of workforce preparation for youth and/or adults in the United States (international applicants can write the report, relating it to their country).
We require a minimum TOEFL score of 90 (IBT) or IELTS score of 6.5 for admission. Test scores should be send to us using ETS institution code 5859.
