The MEd in Reading program prepares teachers who currently hold a bachelor's degree and a teaching license to become a highly-qualified reading teacher. The program is designed to provide three unique foci in graduate coursework: Teaching as research, writing as literacy, and serving as professionals dedicated to social justice. Courses integrate these key components and offer students the skills they need to provide leadership, quality instructional literacy strategies, and support services to K-12 schools in the use of reading and related communication systems. The notion of teaching as research connects inquiry as the basic link for helping teachers explore the nature and function of reading in their own schools and in other institutions. The concept of writing as literacy provides an opportunity for teachers to use writing for different purposes and audiences. In addition, the concept of teaching for social justice requires that candidates act in ways that provide equity and access for all learners.
