Applicants must have a minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale equivalent to U.S. bachelor’s degree. If your GPA meets the minimum admission requirements, the department of major will determine if your overall academic record and test scores meet department requirements. Note: If you do not meet the minimum 3.00 GPA, your application can be considered for admission if you: earned an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher for your last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits OR worked in the program specific profession for 5 plus years, obtained a letter of support from a faculty member in the department, written a detailed statement/essay describing your professional experience and potential to succeed academically, The following are acceptable as proof of English Language Proficiency: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum overall score of 79, IELTS (International English Language Testing System): minimum overall score of 6.5, College of Graduate Studies requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 paper based. Each application requires three (3) Letters of Recommendation (LOR). Gather the names and email addresses of your recommenders. All graduate school applicants must possess the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree. An official academic record from all post-secondary education institutions attended is required. This may take some time so start this early in your application process. Statement of Purpose, Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) Transcript Scans (if applicable) In the instance that official records cannot be obtained, unofficial records may be used to consider your application To be considered official, all academic records and test scores (ie. transcripts, degree certificates, GRE, TOEFL) must be sent directly from the institution and/or testing center to Graduate Admissions. Writing Sample M.A.  from a prior history course is preferred.

The ability to view and understand the world through a historical lens is a skill valued in many professions. In this program, you will further develop your historical perspective through the advanced study and research of the human experience over centuries, continents and cultures. You may focus your graduate studies on the history of modern Europe, modern United States, or North American West (including the Pacific Northwest). Other program strengths include the history of race and ethnicity, Native American cultures, Latin American cultures, labor, gender, religion, politics and international relations. Students may choose a non-thesis option or a thesis option. A Ph.D. in Historical Archaeology is also available.
