Individuals with special needs require teachers with special skills. Graduates of this program teach students ages 3-21 with a wide spectrum of special needs including learning and developmental disabilities, behavior disorders, autism or vision impairments. Children, adolescents and young adults with special needs deserve special teachers. The NIU experiential and research-informed program in Special Education prepares you to work with students from kindergarten through age 21 who have a variety of disabilities and abilities, how to teach all students and how to include students into schools and the community. You'll also learn effective ways to incorporate common core standards and curriculum with individual education plans as well as learn how to use assistive technology. Our program is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education, and our field experiences and coursework adhere to policies, standards and frameworks of the Council for Exceptional Children.
