a. Successful applicants must have completed a baccalaureate degree in education before beginning the master's
program.
3. Grade Point Average
a. Minimum of 3.0 on 4.0 scale
b. Students whose total undergraduate GPA and major GPA are between 2.75 and 2.99 may be admitted on a restricted basis except in the following circumstances:
i. Admission requires GPAs of 2.75 or better in
1. a) the undergraduate major field,
2. b) education coursework, and
3. c) overall.
ii. Students with GPAs below 2.75 may submit supportive evidence and letters of recommendation. Students entering with GPAs below 2.75 are admitted on restricted status and required to obtain a 3.0 graduate GPA in their first 9 graduate hours.

UMSL's Master's Degree in Special Education provides its graduates comprehensive understanding, experience, and application of current, evidence-based best practices in K-12 Special Education. The implementation of strategies and interventions, about which students learn and apply, allows for program graduates to address the nearly 90% of children with special needs who attend public school-based, general education (inclusive) learning environments throughout the academic school year. The M. Ed. Program in special education includes a representation of the important core knowledge in Special Education. The primary goal is to empower professionals to be thoughtful teachers who use best practice when working with students with disabilities. Research and data-based decision making are emphasized throughout the program. Graduate students will translate research into practice in their courses, and learn to analyze multiple types of assessment data. The M. Ed. Program in Special Education consists of an initial required core of courses, an opportunity to develop an area of specialization, and a capstone or exit course.
