Pre- or co-requisites to completion of the program include an upper-division linguistics course and intermediate-high proficiency in a second language. The language proficiency requirement may be met in one of three ways:

Thirty quarter credits of college courses in a second language with a minimum 3.0 GPA in those courses, or
Intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, or
Intermediate-high score on the Diagnostic ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test
International students whose first language is not English automatically meet this proficiency prerequisite. Applicants can be admitted to the program without this background, but they will be required to gain it while enrolled in the program. Students who do not have the prerequisites or who have assistantships are strongly encouraged to complete the program over a two-year period due to the challenging workload.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a minimum TOEFL score of 553 paper-base (217 computer-based/82 internet-based) or IELTS score of 6.5, those with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. university may opt for a satisfactory TOEFL or GRE score. A 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average - GPA - or above (on a 4.0 scale) is required to be academically admissible. The Graduate School calculates the last 90 quarter hour or last 60 semester hour GPA. Submit transcripts from a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. university or an accredited international university where the main language of instruction is English.
Students who originate from one of the following countries are exempt from having to take the TOEFL or IELTS: Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and English-speaking provinces of Canada. Obtain three letters of recommendation written by professors or others capable of assessing your potential for success in a graduate program.
