At the Master's level, each concentration offers a distinct curriculum intended to prepare graduates to enter specialized design practice, consultancy, or to attain the minimum credential for teaching in higher education. Typically, the knowledge gained in the master's degree is foundational to the pursuit of the PhD, and the degree is considered preparatory to advanced research-based work. The degree culminates in a master's thesis.
Architecture is situated at a unique moment in history where a convergence of global interests demands that our discipline respond in a critical and innovative manner. Faced with an ever-increasing focus on creating new forms of renewable energy, smart grids and coastal city solutions, computational engines, immersive environments, and ecologically sound building components for the 21st century, the profession of architecture has inherited a wealth of trans-disciplinary priorities that calls out for a new era of creative inquiry and engagement.
The School of Architecture offers both professional and research degrees at an advanced level. The three-year Master of Architecture is a professional degree program accredited by NAAB and recognized by NCARB. The Master of Science in Architecture is a one-year post-professional program for advanced graduate-level design. The Master of Science in Lighting and Master of Science in Architectural Sciences (with concentrations in Architectural Acoustics and Built Ecologies) are research-oriented programs, as is the PhD in Architectural Sciences (with concentrations in Architectural Acoustics, Built Ecologies, and Lighting). These advanced programs in architecture at Rensselaer are founded on the realization that the increasing demands for effective building performance both perceptually and technically can only be addressed through research.
