国际学生入学条件
All applicants to graduate programs at Penn State must meet basic academic eligibility (verification you have earned a bachelor's degree or its equivalent) and English language requirements. For international student applicants, you may be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores indicating English proficiency. Please visit the Graduate School for current guidance on these requirements.
In addition, the Department of Geography requires the following elements in your completed application:
Three Letters of Reference: You need to provide contact details for three references who have agreed to write you a letter of recommendation. They will be notified automatically by the application system and provided with instructions on how to submit their letter about you to us.
Personal Statement: You need to write a two to three-page narrative in which you highlight your interests, achievements, and research goals. Emphasis should be placed on describing the potential research projects you would like to initiate at Penn State. We want to know why youre choosing Penn State Geography in particularand if you have certain academic advisors in mind, tell us how you think you would collaborate with those faculty members. There is no particular best format for a personal statement, but we like this writing guide from our colleagues in Wisconsin for ways to shape your writing.
R'sum or CV: We recommend you include a R'sum or CV that describes your experience and education. This is also a place where you might provide a link to a portfolio you maintain online.
Test Scores: GRE scores are not required and should not be submitted. The admissions committee will not use GRE scores in evaluating your application. Please note that the graduate school bulletin information will be updated soon to reflect this change.
International applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT).
The Ph.D. is a different kind of degree from the master's degree. A doctoral candidate in Geography must be capable of making original contributions to knowledge and scholarship. It is unlikely that a person will make such contributions unless he or she concentrates on a narrow and clearly defined field of study. We require, however, that doctoral candidates know more of geography than their particular specialties, thus, any aspirant for a doctorate must obtain master's training or its equivalent before being admitted to doctoral candidacy. In short, admission to doctoral candidacy is official recognition that a student's general foundation in the breadth of geography is satisfactory. Students then devote their attention to developing depth in chosen specialties.<br>The general requirements for a doctoral degree in geography are more rigorous than those for a master's degree. At the same time, the greater flexibility of the doctoral program allows advanced students to pursue programs of study tailored to their special interests and needs.
