Department of Geography requires the following elements in your completed application:

Three Letters of Reference: You need to provide contact details for three references who have agreed to write you a letter of recommendation. They will be notified automatically by the application system and provided with instructions on how to submit their letter about you to us.
Personal Statement: You need to write a two to three-page narrative in which you highlight your interests, achievements, and research goals. Emphasis should be placed on describing the potential research projects you would like to initiate at Penn State. We want to know why you're choosing Penn State Geography in particular-and if you have certain academic advisors in mind, tell us how you think you would collaborate with those faculty members. There is no particular ''best'' format for a personal statement, but we like this writing guide from our colleagues in Wisconsin for ways to shape your writing.
Resume or CV: We recommend you include a Resume or CV that describes your experience and education. This is also a place where you might provide a link to a portfolio you maintain online.
International applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisaaional admission, enrollment, and, if necessary, remedial course work.
