The graduate program in Museum Studies showcases the best of an UMSL education: productive civic partnerships, academic excellence, and strong support for students. We offer an MA in History with a Concentration in Museum Studies, and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies. These degrees prepare students for professional careers in museums, historic sites and societies, cultural agencies, and related organizations. We address pressing needs of museums and heritage institutions in the 21st century: collaboration and community engagement, digital media and new technologies, and diversity and cross-cultural training. We teach the sociocultural, historical, and intellectual foundations of museums, the theory and practice of public history and cultural heritage, professional practicums for multiple museum career paths, qualitative, quantitative and community based research methods, digital media, non-profit resource development, the comparative and cross-cultural study of material culture, and the disciplinary methods, professional protocols, and modes of analysis in History.
