The Department of Medical Biophysics is an interdisciplinary department with a strong history of excellence and discovery in cancer research, treatment, and beyond. Located primarily at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Sunnybrook Research Institute, and SickKids Research Institute, the department offers research training leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The multidisciplinary program in cancer research and broader biomedical research cuts across the conventional boundaries of biology, physics, translational medicine and engineering to deliver a modern, advanced academic curriculum and world-class research training.<br>The graduate student training program is a vital component of the Department of Medical Biophysics, dating back more than 50 years to its origins in cancer research at the Ontario Cancer Institute. The department offers interdisciplinary research-focused graduate studies at both the Masters (MSc) and Doctoral (PhD) level. The MSc program is a common entry point, but the emphasis is on the PhD program. Course work is intended to broaden the backgrounds of all students, most of whom enter with undergraduate training in the life or physical sciences. The average time for program completion is 2.5 years for MSc students and 5-6 years for PhD students.<br>The function of the central nervous system and its role in disease is an active area of research for faculty in MBP. Their work uses a range of molecular, cellular, model system, and clinical research approaches, often making use of imaging technologies to obtain novel insights into the nervous system in health and disease.
