A completed master’s degree. A grade point average of 3.5 or above on prior graduate-level course work. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can address the applicant’s past academic performance and future academic potential in the field of WGS. A statement of purpose: a short essay (approximately 1,000 words) discussing the applicant’s personal and professional goals and how TWU’s Ph.D. program in Multicultural Women’s and Gender Studies can assist the applicant in meeting these goals. A writing sample: an academic paper not to exceed 6,500 words, not including notes and references. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79 (iBT), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 or higher, GRE verbal score of 500 (153, Revised GRE) or higher.

TWU's diverse campus and historical mission for women gives students who seek a comprehensive doctoral education in women's and gender studies a unique opportunity to combine social justice issues with multicultural, transformational scholarship. Our program aims to shape the field of women's and gender studies for the 21st century by focusing on: A thorough, yet flexible curriculum of core courses, qualifying examinations on pedagogy and transdisciplinary studies, guided electives and research tools. A dual-emphasis on teaching and publications in preparation for different academic positions. Small classrooms consisting of six new students admitted in alternating years to ensure quality instruction, personalized mentoring and close supervision of research. A strong, supportive staff from both our own and TWU's different academic departments.
