Minimum TOEFL Requirements ibt/pbt: 100/600 Applicants must hold, or expect to hold before enrollment at Stanford, a bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association.
Official Transcript(s): Applicants must submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. International Students: Applicants whose native language is not English and do not possess a U.S. bachelor's degree are expected to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and have the results sent to Graduate Admissions, Office of the University Registrar (university code: 4704). TOEFL scores must be from a test taken within the last 18 months. For more information, visit the Graduate Admissions Required Exams page.
Statement of Purpose: Applicants must compose a statement of purpose that explains how the program would advance the applicant's academic or career goals. The statement should not exceed two (2) pages in length, single-spaced.
Letters of Recommendation: Three (3) letters of recommendation on the applicant's behalf should be received from faculty members in Russian, East European, and Eurasian fields (one should be from an area language instructor). Instructions on submitting letters of recommendation can be found in the online application.
Additional Required Materials:
a writing sample of 20 pages or less in English on an academic topic in Russian, East European, or Eurasian studies
a resume of college-level courses taken that are relevant to Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies, including language courses, with self-reported final grades
Successful applicants generally demonstrate the following: outstanding academic achievement, significant coursework in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies in multiple disciplines, three years of college-level language study in Russian, an East European, or Central Asian language (candidates with fewer years of area language study are considered), strong analytical writing skills, high GRE scores (particularly verbal and analytical writing), study or work experience in the region, strong letters of recommendation, and a persuasive statement of purpose explaining how the program would advance the applicant's academic and career goals.

CREEES's one-year interdisciplinary master's degree program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies provides students with a strong grounding in historical and contemporary processes of change in the Russian Federation, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Core requirements provide intellectual cohesion, while electives and the capstone project give students the flexibility to pursue their own academic and professional interests drawing on Stanford's excellence in teaching and research and rich library and archival resources. The REEES MA program prepares students for a range of professional and academic careers.
