The interdisciplinary major in European studies (EUS) is designed for students who want to broaden their understanding of European societies and to prepare for international careers or advanced study involving history, political science, economics, and cultural studies. The program curriculum is designed to provide cross-disciplinary expertise in a specialty of the student's own choosing. In consultation with the program director, students select a major focus and specific courses that will fulfill the requirements for the major. This focus might consist of a thematic or comparative topic (such as Central European literature, or law and economics in the European Union) or the culture and society of a particular nation (France, Germany, Italy, Russia, or Spain). In addition to the core requirements, majors enroll in a variety of relevant courses in the social sciences and humanities, study a foreign language of their choice, and write a senior thesis.

Most EUS majors also participate in one of the study abroad programs in Europe offered through Vanderbilt's Global Education Office. This experience helps students prepare for careers in a global, interconnected world. Students can combine their EUS major with one of the languages, literature, and/or cultural studies majors: French and European studies, German and European studies, Italian and European studies, Russian and East European and European studies, or Spanish and European studies. The EUS minor, which requires 18 hours of coursework, is a great complement to a variety of fields, from anthropology and philosophy to English literature and political science.
